Masticatory System

The masticatory system, also known as the stomatognathic system, encompasses all structures involved in the intake and processing of food. This includes

  • the teeth,
  • jawbones,
  • masticatory muscles,
  • temporomandibular joints (TMJs),
  • lips,
  • cheeks, and
  • tongue, as well as
  • the salivary glands.
The masticatory system is responsible for breaking down food and mixing it with saliva to prepare it for digestion.
A properly functioning occlusion (the way the upper and lower teeth come together) is essential for efficient chewing.
Disruptions in the masticatory system, such as malocclusions or problems with the temporomandibular joints, can lead to pain, difficulty chewing, and other health issues.
The diagnosis and treatment of masticatory system disorders often require an interdisciplinary approach that may include dental, orthodontic, and physiotherapeutic interventions.
