Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis (TMJ OA)
TMJ osteoarthritis is a form of degenerative joint disease that affects the temporomandibular joint, the joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull. This condition is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage within the joint, leading to pain, stiffness, and limited movement in the jaw.
TMJ osteoarthritis can be caused by various factors, including:
- Overuse of the joint,
- Injuries,
- Inflammation,
- Genetic predispositions, or
- Age-related wear and tear.
Symptoms of TMJ osteoarthritis often include a clicking or grinding sound when moving the jaw, pain when chewing or speaking, and a reduced ability to open the mouth widely.
