Dental Erosion

Dental erosion refers to the irreversible loss of tooth enamel due to chemical processes without bacterial involvement. This loss results from direct contact between teeth and acidic substances, such as those found in certain foods and drinks (e.g., citrus fruits, soft drinks) or gastric acids from reflux and vomiting.

Characteristic signs include:

  • smooth,
  • shiny tooth surfaces, and
  • the absence of natural chewing surface structure.

Affected teeth may become more sensitive to temperature stimuli and lose substance, leading to both functional and aesthetic issues.

Prevention and treatment strategies include reducing the consumption of acidic foods, using fluoride-containing dental care products for remineralization, and, if necessary, restorative dental treatments. Wearing dental splints may also help protect the teeth from further erosion.
