Intra-occlusal Inlays
Intra-occlusal inlays are dental restorations designed to treat larger defects in the chewing surface without covering the entire tooth with a crown. Unlike traditional crowns, they preserve most of the natural tooth structure, making them a minimally invasive alternative.
These inlays are precisely fitted into the prepared occlusal surface and are typically made from:
-
Ceramic (aesthetic and durable)
-
Composite (more affordable, suitable for smaller defects)
-
Gold (highly durable and biocompatible)
They are especially suited for moderate to larger cavities, where a regular filling is insufficient, but a crown is not yet necessary.
Treatment steps include:
-
Tooth preparation and impression
-
Custom fabrication in a dental lab
-
Placement and adhesive bonding during a second visit
Advantages of intra-occlusal inlays:
-
High precision fit and chewing surface stability
-
Long-lasting results with proper care
-
Preservation of natural tooth structure
To protect the new restoration from parafunctional stress such as bruxism, it is recommended—especially in cases of bruxism or TMD (CMD)—to use a protective splint like the RehaSplint. This can help extend the lifespan of the inlay and reduce strain on the masticatory muscles.
