Orthodontic Appliances
Orthodontic appliances are specially designed medical devices used to correct dental misalignments, bite abnormalities, and irregular tooth positions. They may be either fixed in the mouth or removable. Their effectiveness is based on the continuous application of pressure to the teeth and jawbone to achieve targeted movement.
Common types of orthodontic appliances include:
-
Fixed braces made of brackets, bands, and wires
-
Clear aligners, offering a discreet and removable alternative
-
Bite splints, especially useful in cases with concurrent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues
-
Other devices such as retainers, headgear, or palatal expanders, which can influence jaw growth or stabilization
Treatment duration:
Depending on the severity of the misalignment and the age of the patient, treatment may last from several months to several years.
Goals of orthodontic treatment include:
-
achieving a functional occlusion
-
improving oral health
-
optimizing tooth alignment and smile aesthetics
During active orthodontic treatment, the RehaSplint can provide additional support, particularly in transitional bite phases, to relieve stress on the masticatory muscles and aid in bite stabilization.
