Splint Therapy
Splint therapy is a dental treatment method primarily used to relieve jaw joint disorders, teeth grinding (bruxism), and occlusal problems.
A specially fabricated plastic splint, also known as a bite guard or occlusal splint, is used. This splint is worn over the teeth of either the upper or lower jaw and serves to:
- protect the teeth from further wear,
- relieve tension in the jaw muscles, and
- ensure even distribution of bite forces.
There are various types of splints, such as relaxation splints, positioning splints, and bruxism splints, each tailored to the individual diagnosis.
Splint therapy can also help reduce headaches and neck pain caused by jaw misalignments. Regular check-ups with the dentist are important to monitor effectiveness and adjust the splint if necessary.
