Oral Dyskinesia
Oral dyskinesia refers to involuntary movements of the oral muscles that are unrelated to normal chewing, speaking, or swallowing functions. These disorders can have various causes, including neurological diseases, side effects of certain medications, or muscular dysfunctions.
- uncontrollable twitching,
- facial grimacing, and
- repetitive movements of the lips, tongue, or jaw.
Dyskinesias often present as involuntary, sometimes rhythmic movements that may occur repeatedly. These disorders can significantly impact quality of life by interfering with speaking, eating, and social interaction.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve medication, physiotherapy, or, in severe cases, surgical intervention. An interdisciplinary approach—incorporating neurologists, dentists, and therapists—is often necessary to achieve the best treatment outcomes.
